Answer all questions. Each question carries 3 Marks.

  1. Sketch the p-v and t-s diagram of the Otto cycle and name the different processes. Write down the expression for the efficiency of the cycle.
  2. Sketch a typical ignition system of petrol engine and name the different components.
  3. Write short note on CFC free refrigerants.
  4. Compare between belt drive and gear drive.
  5. Differentiate between welding and forging.
  6. What are the advantages of casting over manufacturing processes?
  7. What are the elements of CNC machines?
  8. Write a short note on grinding process.

Answer any 8 questions(Two from each Module). Each question carries 6 Marks

MODULE I

  1. Derive an expression for the  air standard efficiency of a diesel cycle.
  2. State First law of Thermodynamics and show that energy is a property of the system.
  3. An IC engine working on Otto cycle takes the air in a 0.97 bar and 35o The compression ratio is 7. The heat supplied during the cycle is 1.5 MJ/kg
  4. i) The air standard efficiency
  5. ii) The maximum temperature attained and

iii) The work done per kg of the working fluid.

MODULE II

  1. With the help of a neat sketches explain the working of four stroke diesel engine.
  2. With neat diagram explain open and closed gas turbine cycles.
  3. Describe the working of centrifugal pump with a neat sketch.

MODULE III

  1. Explain the working of window type air conditioning unit.
  2. With the help of flow and p-h diagram explain the working of a vapour compression refrigeration system?
  3. Explain the desirable properties of refrigerants.

MODULE IV

  1. Explain the working of MPFI system in vehicles.
  2. With a neat sketch explain the working of a single plate clutch.
  3. What are the advantages and disadvantages of rope drive as a power transmission method?

  2. Describe the different forging operations.
