A NEW POSTURE MONITORING SYSTEM FOR SMART PHONE USERS

 

ABSTRACT

 

With the widespread use of smartphones, users tend to use their smartphone  for a long period  of time in unhealthy postures; bending forward the neck and watching the relatively small  screen  closely   with  concentration.   If  users   keep  such unhealthy postures for a long time, they are susceptible to musculoskeletal disorders and eye problems such as cervical disc and myopia, respectively. To prevent users from having these diseases, we propose a new methodology  to monitor the posture of smartphone  users with built-in sensors. The proposed mechanism  estimates  various  values  representing  user  postures like  the  tilt  angle  of  the  neck,   viewing   distance,   and  gaze condition of the user, by analyzing sensor data from a front-faced camera, 3-axis accelerometer, orientation sensor, or any combination  thereof, and warns the user if estimated values are maintained within the abnormal range over the pre-defined time. As  a  proof  of  concept,  we  developed  an  Android  application named Smart Pose which estimates the user’s neck tilt angle from analysis of the facial image, shakiness and   tilt angle of the smartphone,  and  then  notifies  the  user  when  her/his  neck  tilt angle is maintained  in an unusual range during the smartphone operation. Also, we validated the result of our system by the comparison with measurements from 3D posture imaging equipment in our research facility. Via the proposed mechanism, a participant was able to be aware of his unhealthy postures, and then try to correct them.

AN ATM WITH AN EYE

 

ABSTRACT

 

                         There is an urgent need for improving security in banking region. With the advent of ATM though banking became a lot easier it even became a lot vulnerable. The chances of misuse of this much hyped ‘insecure’ baby product (ATM) are manifold due to the exponential growth of ‘intelligent’ criminals day by day. ATM systems today use no more than an access card and PIN for identity verification. This situation is unfortunate since tremendous progress has been made in biometric identification techniques, including finger printing, facial recognition, and iris scanning. This paper proposes the development of a system that integrates Facial recognition and Iris scanning technology into the identity verification process used in ATMs. The development of such a system would serve to protect consumers and financial institutions alike from fraud and other breaches of security.

GPU

ABSTRACT

The graphics processing unit (GPU) has become an integral part of today’s mainstream computing systems. Over the past six years, there has been a marked increase in the performance and capabilities of GPUs.

The modern GPU is not only a powerful graphics engine but also a highly parallel programmable processor featuring peak arithmetic and memory bandwidth that substantially outpaces its CPU counterpart.

The GPU’s rapid increase in both programmability and capability has spawned a research community that has successfully mapped a broad range of computationally demanding, complex problems to the GPU.

This effort in general purpose computing on the GPU, also known as GPU computing, has positioned the GPU as a compelling alternative to traditional microprocessors in high-performance computer systems of the future. We describe the background, hardware, and programming model for GPU computing, summarize the state of the art in tools and techniques, and present four GPU computing successes in game physics and computational biophysics that deliver order-of-magnitude performance gains over optimized CPU applications.

EYEGAZE COMMUNICATION SYSTEM

ABSTRACT

The Eyegaze System is a communication and control system for people with complex physical disabilities. You run the system with your eyes. By looking at control keys disabled on a screen, a person can synthesize speech, control his environment (lights, appliances, etc.), type, operate a telephone, run computer software, operate a computer mouse, and access the Internet and e-mail. Eyegaze Systems are being used to write books, attend school and enhance the quality of life of people with disabilities all over the world.

 

Imagine yourself being an intelligent, motivated hard working person in the fiercely competitive market of information technology, but just one problem, you can’t use your hands, or you can’t speak. How do you do your job? How do you stay employed? You can, because of a very good gift from computer industry: The Eyegaze, a communication and control system you run with your eyes. The Eyegaze System is a direct-select vision controlled communication and control system. It was developed in Fairfax, Virginia by LC Technologies.

RED TACTON

 

ABSTRACT

      At the end of 2002 the Japanese telecommunications group NTT had announced that  it  would  develop  a  new  data  transmission  technology that  uses  the  conductive properties of the human body to exchange information between electronic devices. With RedTacton the company has now scarcely two and a half years later presented its first prototype of a Human Area Network (HAN). The basic principle of the RedTacton concept is the creation of minute electrostatic fieldsthat modulated by a code-giver to carry digital information are capacitively transmitted to human skin as a conductor, thence to be transmitted upon physical contact. To read out the data bits NTT makes use of a novel type of opto-electrical receiver equipped with a miniature laser whose light ray is reflected by a crystal.At the receiving end the electrostatic fields evoked by the RedTacton sender cause the electrical field in the environment of the crystal to change, which in turn induces changes in the polarization of the reflected laser light. These changes in polarization the opto-electrical receiver interprets as data bits,which it converts into electrical signals that can be processed by a PDA, for instance
