  1. Define the following terms (4 marks)

a) Modulus of Rigidity

b) Bulk Modulus

c)poor resilience

d) Factor of Safety

2. Explain the principle of super position (4 marks)

3. Explain with neat sketch the Stress Strain diagram for mild steel bar in tension (4 marks)

4. Write a short note on thermal stresses (4 marks)

5. Derive the relation between modulus of elasticity and Bulk modulus.(4 mark)

6. Calculate the minimum wall thickness of thin cylinder 1 m in diameter, if it is to withstand an internal pressure of 200 N/cm∧2  and the longitudinal and hoop stress not to exceeds 3000 N/cm∧2 and 4000 N/cm∧2 respectively.

7.Find the Euler’s Critical load for a hollow cylindrical cast iron column of 250 mm external diameter and 30 mm thickness. it is 5 cm long and hinged at bath ends. value of E = 8×10 ∧ 4 N/mm∧2. For what length the critical load by Euler’s and Rankine’s formula be equal. Take Constants ∝= 1/1600 and σ = 600 N/mm∧2

8. A beam of length  7 m simply supported at the ends A and  B is loaded with two point loads of  60kN and 70kN at a distance of 1.2m and 4 m from left end. Determine the position and magnitude of  maximum deflection .Take E 2 x 10∧5 N/mm ∧2 and I = 8500 cm∧4
